Hier spielt die Musik - Origin als Teil des Werkzeugorchesters
Christoph Noe ist Designer, Hobbymusiker und passionierter Gitarrenbauer. In seiner Werkstatt mitten in München fertigt er unter seiner Marke On Guitars E-Gitarren und E-Bässe, ganz individuell nach Kundenwunsch. Von der Holzauswahl bis zur letzten Einstellung am Instrument macht er alles selbst. Eine Leidenschaft bei der er Design, handwerkliches Geschick und digitale Präzision in harmonischen Einklang bringt.
Hier gibt es keine Massenware, sondern handgefertigte Unikate. Den Anspruch an eine schnelle Anpassungsfähigkeit sowie höchste Qualität kann Christoph nicht nur dank seiner langjährigen Erfahrung, sondern auch der Arbeit mit Origin gewährleisten: „Als ich vor Jahren zum ersten Mal von einer handgeführten, digitalen Oberfräse gehört habe, hatte ich gleich so ein ‘muss ich haben Gefühl‘“, erinnert er sich zurück.
Seitdem hat sich sein Workflow stark verändert und das Werkzeug ist zu einem unersetzlichen Teil vieler Arbeitsschritte geworden. „Ich nutze sie vor allem, um bei Konturen, Taschen oder anderen Fräsungen eine extrem hohe Präzision zu erreichen. Sie ist Teil meines Maschinenorchesters geworden und mittlerweile nicht mehr aus der Werkstatt wegzudenken.“
Design gibt den Ton an
Seine Instrumente haben nicht nur einen guten Sound, selbst die Namen sind klangvoll. Seine Bässe und Gitarren benennt er nach Vogelarten: Es gibt die Dohle, den Star oder den Fink. Natürlich spielt Christoph auch selbst Gitarre - aber nicht professionell, wie er bescheiden zugibt. Seit er als Teenager Bass in einer Band gespielt hat, ist der Gitarrenbau ein Teil seines Lebens geworden. Eine Leidenschaft, die er mit seiner Marke On Guitars auch zum Beruf gemacht hat.
„Das Geschäft mit dem Gitarrenbau ist nicht mein Hauptjob, aber es gibt mir einfach wahnsinnig viel”, so Christoph. Er liebt die Verbindung zwischen dem digitalen Entwurf, Produktdesign und dem handwerklichen Bauprozess. „Ich sehe mich selber auch nicht als den klassischen Gitarrenbauer. Ich bin mehr ein Tüftler und Gestalter.“ Ein Grund mehr, wieso Christoph die Origin so schätzt. Mit ihr kann er seine durchaus komplexen Zeichnungen und Entwürfe sehr präzise auf das Werkstück übertragen - in einer Qualität, die man sonst nur von einer CNC-Maschine kennt.
Christophs Stil bzw. seine Designsprache ist geprägt von einer hohen gestalterischen Qualität und sorgfältig ausgewählten Materialien. „Die Gitarren, die ich baue, haben nichts Nostalgisches an sich oder sind wahnsinnig ausgefallen. Ich mag es, die Dinge einfach zu halten. Das Instrument soll auf der Bühne ehrlich wirken und nicht aufgesetzt.“ Und das hört man auch am Klang.

Evolution of luthiery
Because of the flexible possibilities Christoph has with the Origin + Workstation, he also dared to do something he had in mind for a long time: his first bass model called Pitpit. Like several guitars before it, this model was designed in CAD with Origin in mind for the production stage.
Because a bass neck is significantly longer than a regular guitar neck, Christoph needed to expand the dimensions of his workspace. "I was always thinking about a larger Workstation, so I came up with the idea of just combining two Workstations." Firmly mounted by aluminum profiles and legs to prevent tipping forward, they’re a natural fit for Christoph. "It's really like an inseparable duo and an absolute gamechanger for me. I don't even remember what it was like, working with just one."
Confidence in the process
Working economically is a critical factor in Christoph's small production of five to six guitars per year. Origin helps him save time and money. "I used to need a lot of templates made of MDF to solve certain things — a different one for each pickup. That's eliminated now with my digital templates." He says the quality of his work has also improved, thanks to cleaner cut edges and fewer burn marks. Origin also gives him the confidence to make more things himself, experimenting and thus increasing his abilities. "The nut for this bass, for example, it's milled from brass. And things like that, even in a very small number of pieces, I can make so easily myself, with top quality and the highest precision."

Craft redefined
Christoph has also learned a lot about building guitars thanks to a good network and his online community. "The fact that I loaded the jig for the neck profile on ShaperHub, for example, was in order to help give back to the community that’s helped me find my way." Today, he's the go-to guy for many other members of those communities, including when it comes to using Origin to build guitars.

Christoph is certain that Origin will find its way into the workshop of more and more luthiers in the future. "A lot of people say, 'What does a digital router have to do with craftsmanship anymore?' But for me, Origin is a tool that has quite a lot of what I mean by craftsmanship and manual work: its quick adaptability, its precision, its attention to detail—it's all in there for me."
